Search and Non-Wage Job Characteristics

چکیده

This paper quanti es the importance of non-wage job characteristics to workers by estimating a structural on-the-job search model. The model generalizes the standard search framework by allowing workers to search for jobs based on both wages and job-speci c non-wage utility ows. Within the structure of the search model, data on accepted wages and wage changes at job transitions identify the importance of nonwage utility through revealed preference. The parameters of the model are estimated by simulated minimum distance using the 1997 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY97). The estimates reveal that utility from non-wage job characteristics plays an important role in determining job mobility, the value of jobs to workers, and the gains from job search. More speci cally, non-wage utility accounts for approximately one-third of the total gains from job mobility. These large non-pecuniary gains from search are missed by search models which assume that the wage captures the entire value of a job to a worker.

Non-Wage Job Characteristics And The Case of The Missing Margin

Job search models typically describe jobs in terms of wages without accounting for other characteristics, but empirical evidence suggests non-wage characteristics are an important determinant of job choice. For instance, workers in the NLSY79 report moving from a higher paying job to a lower paying job in 33% of voluntary job-tojob transitions. I estimate an equilibrium-based job search model t...

Job Dispersion and Compensating Wage Differentials

The empirical literature on compensating wage differentials has a mixed history. While there have been some successes, much of this research finds weak support for the theory of equalizing differences. We argue that these negative results can be explained by bias in estimated compensating wage differential regressions. The source of this bias is dispersion in total job values, or “job dispersio...

Wealth Effects on Job Preferences

Preferences over jobs depend on wages and non-wage aspects. Variation in wealth may change the importance of income as a motivation for working. Higher wealth levels may make good non-wage characteristics relatively more important. This hypothesis is tested empirically using a reduced form search model in which differential job leaving rates identify willingness to pay for non-wage aspects of j...

Job and Wage Mobility in a Search Model with Non-Compliance (Exemptions) with the Minimum Wage

Job and Wage Mobility in a Search Model with Non-Compliance (Exemptions) with the Minimum Wage How well does a simple search on-the-job model fit the eighteen years of job and wage mobility of high school graduates? To answer this question we are confronted from the data with a prevalent non-compliance and exemptions from the minimum wage. We incorporate this observation in a job search model w...
